John Samuel Fluke II, of Pocahontas, formerly of the Noland community passed away Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Pocahontas Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

John was born May 15, 1947 in Pocahontas to the late John Samuel and Novella Mae Chastain Fluke.  He worked for golf bag, on the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, as a truck driver, a farm hand, and after retiring he delivered meals on wheels.

John was a proud Vietnam era veteran of the United States Army where he earned the rank of sergeant.  He was awarded the calvary certificate for meritorious service during the Washington, DC riots following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  He also served on the inauguration detail for President Richard Nixon.

John enjoyed photography, metal detecting, rock hunting, being outdoors, genealogy, was an avid Mark Martin and Crystal Gayle fan, enjoyed Civil War reenactments, and anything to do with history.

John was a faithful member of the Imboden Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Samuel and Novella Mae Chastain Fluke; and by a sister, Mary “Sue” Fluke Grissom.

John is survived by one daughter, Rebecca A (Donald) Boucher of Pocahontas; one son, John Samuel (Phyllis) Fluke III of Maynard; grandchildren, Breanna and Bayleigh Fluke of Maynard; brother, Frankie Chastain of Pocahontas; special cousin, Sonya Baker of Michigan, special friend, Ada Shocklee of Pocahontas, and many other relatives and friends.

Cremation has been chosen as the method of final disposition.  A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at 11 AM at Imboden Church of Christ.  Services will conclude with military honors being rendered.

All services are under direction of McNabb Funeral Home.
