With the election just days away, it’s time to think about what your Sheriff has done for Lawrence County in just two short years.
 
Sheriff Jody Dotson and his hard working staff have implementing many positive changes in the Sheriff’s Office that may sometimes be overlooked.
 
When the Sheriff took office, he first had to address the overcrowding situation in the jail, he did that and continues to keep our jail within standards. Sheriff Dotson has also implemented the “Inmate Work Program”. This program has benefited every town and community in Lawrence County. Inmate workers are sent out everyday to assist with trash pick-up and other projects in the county. This program not only helps the county but cuts labor cost by providing inmates to work at no charge. Those that have benefited from these programs include the Lawrence County Fair and Rodeo, Walnut Ridge, Hoxie, Imboden, Ravenden, Lake Charles, Smithville, Lynn, Clover Bend and many others.
 
Sheriff Dotson has also worked in our schools with the ATOD Program, he takes the time visit every school in the county promoting “Red Ribbon Week” and other anti-drug youth programs. These programs are not just in the schools, he has also worked with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in our area.
 
Sheriff Dotson has also expanded the Reserve Deputy Program, this program puts certified volunteer deputies out in the county at no cost to tax payers. Reserves are used at the Lawrence County Fair and Rodeo, Foothills Festival in Black Rock, Beatles On The Ridge, Portia Picnic and other events that require extra manpower. The Reserve Program is also used to assist full time officers by providing extra patrols in the extreme rural parts of our county.
 
Sheriff Dotson is also responsible for creating the Sheriff’s Office Website, this website gives residents information on the department and contact information including the Sheriff’s Tips Email which has received numerous tips resulting in criminals being apprehended. It also has the Most Wanted Page, this page has led to dozens of arrest with the assistance of the public.
 
In 2011 Sheriff Dotson assembled the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Dive and Recovery Team, a volunteer team for water patrol, victim and evidence recovery. This team consist of trained divers and tenders ready to deploy in the event of flooding, drowning’s or evidence discarded in our waterways. With the help of the Office Of Emergency Services, the equipment and training was acquired at no cost to our citizens.
 
Sheriff Dotson has also implemented the RX Take back Program here in Lawrence County. A permanent “Drop Box” was installed at the Sheriff’s Office where residents can safely discard unwanted prescription medication. The Sheriff has also held numerous “Take back Days” throughout the county. These events have been held in Walnut Ridge, Imboden and Strawberry several times over the last two years.
 
The Sheriff has worked close with the County Judge and Quorum Court keeping his department within budget.
