11:00 a.m. – Screening of Hoxie: The First Stand, David Appleby’s acclaimed documentary chronicling the events that made Hoxie a pivotal chapter in the history of school desegregation.
12:00 p.m. – Welcome and keynote program featuring:
Introduction by Ethel Tompkins, President of Hoxie: The First Stand and a former Hoxie student who witnessed this historic chapter firsthand
Keynote address by Dr. Carmen Williams, Director of the Honors College at Arkansas State University
Remarks by Darlene Moore of the Lawrence County Historical Society
Closing remarks by Leslie Reed, Secretary of Hoxie: The First Stand
Following the program, attendees will enjoy a screening of Terrence Ward’s award-winning documentary, Right in the Sight of God.
We invite everyone to join us as we celebrate Juneteenth and reflect on Hoxie’s important place in the ongoing pursuit of equality, justice, and educational opportunity.
