More information has been released in the shooting death of an intruder in Cherokee Village. The suspect identified as 36-year-old Samuel West broke through the back sliding glass door of a home on Katta Drive.

The homeowner thought it was his wife returning from church, then realized it was an intruder.

Authorities say the homeowner shouted “stop” at the intruder before firing multiple shots when the intruder advanced toward him, killing him.

West was released from the Sharp County Detention Center hours earlier after being jailed for violating a no-contact order involving his estranged wife.

Authorities say West had a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2009.

Authorities report the case appears to be self-defense, no arrests are expected.
