The Arkansas State Police released further information after a man was shot during an incident after he reportedly began firing a gun randomly outside his residence and law enforcement attempted to have him surrender.

According to a ASP news release, law enforcement responded to the scene around 3:45 p.m. at a residence on South Free Street.

Officers made repeated attempts to have William Chad Newman, age 40, drop his weapons and surrender.

Newman refused and then pointed one of the guns at the officers, who then fired on the suspect, Newman later died at the scene.

Newman’s body has been taken to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory where an autopsy will be conducted.

ASP stated the investigation will be presented to the Lawrence County prosecuting attorney to determine if the use of deadly force by the troopers and deputy was consistent with Arkansas law.
