James Sydney “Syd” Humes, age 25 of Black Rock was arrested by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office on an outstanding warrant for rape, a Class Y Felony.

Court documents state on June 3rd 2020 a mother reported to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office that her daughter was sexually assaulted by a family friend. Lawrence County Officers reported the assault to the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline.

On June 4th 2020 investigators from the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division joined the investigation. The victim who was only 13 years old at the time of the incident, told investigators she’d known the suspect for 6-7 years.

According to the affidavit, text messages between the then 24 year old man and 13 year old child were discovered by a family friend and reported to the mother.

The affidavit went on to state that on or about May 23rd 2020 the two went to Humes’ home on Lawrence 131 (Annieville) where the 24 year old had sex with the 13 year old.

A warrant was issued for Humes after investigators established probable cause in the case. Humes is currently in the Lawrence County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing. Humes is due back in court on November 16th.
