At 5:17 pm the Black Rock Fire Department and ambulances from both AET and Pro Med were dispatched to a one vehicle roll over with one person trapped inside. The accident occurred on Hwy. 25 near Powhatan.

As medical units and law enforcement arrived, the subject freed himself from the vehicle and began walking away from the scene. As he was questioned by medical personnel , he told them that the wreck was an attempt to kill himself.

The male subject then took off towards the river and jumped into the water in a second attempt to harm himself. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Dive Team was paged to the scene. A rescue swimmer from the dive team made entry into the river where he had to subdue the subject before swimming back to the bank. The unidentified male subject claimed to have taken numerous narcotics. He was checked by the medics and a medical helicopter was requested to the scene. Survival Flight landed in the area of the Powhatan boat launch and the subject was transferred from the ambulance to helicopter. He was flown to NEA hospital in Jonesboro.

The accident is being investigated by the LCSO. Dail’s Wrecker Service was called to the scene to removed the vehicle. All units were cleared and the highway was opened back up at 6:21 pm.
