Lake Charles Labor Day Weekend Park Programs/Events 2016
Friday, Sept. 2nd
Protect and Restore. 10am-11am   Nature Center
Arkansas has many threatened and endangered animals. Find out what some of those animals are, how they got on the list, and conservation efforts to restore their populations. Also learn about some of the success stories Arkansas has had with restoration and reintroduction of animals in the state.
Nature Center Exploration  1pm-3pm  Nature Center
Come self-explore our Nature Center and learn about some of the unique wildlife in your area. Our park interpreter will be there to help answer any questions you may have and give impromptu programs. Animals include turtles, frogs, snakes, and more.
Creature Feature  3pm-3:45pm  Nature Center
Join the park interpreter in taking an in depth look at one of our resident park animals. Learn about a unique animal around you using living animals, skins and furs, bones and skulls, and/or other mediums to better understand the creatures around us.
Lake Cruise  4pm-5pm  Register at Visitor’s Center,
Meet at Snapp Pier
Head out on the lake with our park interpreter. Learn of the history and creation of the lake and discuss various wildlife in and around the lake. Bringing water and sunscreen/sun protection encouraged. Adults: $7, Youth 6-17: $3.50, Kids Under 6: Free
Saturday, Sept. 3rd
Insect Trap Building  10am-11am  Nature Center
Are you allergic to bees or wasps? Perhaps have small children or pets that could get stung? During this program you will learn how to create your own insect trap that will lure in potentially harmful insects using old plastic bottles. These traps are re-usable and are a good alternative to similar store bought traps.

The 3C’s and 3R’s  3pm-3:45pm  Nature Center
AR’s Venomous Snakes
Not every snake in Arkansas is potentially dangerous. In fact, only 6 are venomous. Come find out easy ways to remember them and ways to tell them and other snakes apart. Also find out about some of the other snakes in Arkansas that are beneficial, but often harmed due to mistaken identity.

Sunday, Sept. 4th
Nature Hike  10am-11am  White Oak Trail Head
Join our park interpreter for a nature hike down the White Oak trail. This 1.5mi. trail is a moderate level trail that winds through park. Be on the lookout for birds, mammals, turtles, and other wildlife. The interpreter will help point out and talk about the unique wildlife in the area. Be sure to bring something to drink and sun protection is encouraged.

A Seed’s Travels  3pm-3:45pm.  Nature Center
New plants are able to grow through seeds. But how this those seeds get to where they are now? Plants use all kinds of methods for dispersing their seeds. Come join us and find out what some of these ways are. It may even help you to identify where a particular plant might be found.

Monday, Sept. 5th
Animal Tracking  10am-11am  Nature Center
Have you ever found an unfamiliar track, feather, or tuft of fur and wondered what it could be from? Sometimes you can narrow down what something is by what it isn’t. In this program learn about deductive and observation skills that can help you identify various animals by what they’ve left behind.

Our bats and honey bees are an invaluable resource to Arkansans. Join us in discovering the vast potential impacts of losing these animals on the ecosystem, economy, and our everyday lives. Also, discover ways you can aid in their continued survival.
