Beginning this Saturday, February 1, Powhatan Historic State Park will host an interactive program nearly every Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Families and people of all ages are invited to discover the remarkable history that can be found in their own back yard! Programs are free of charge. February’s programs include:

Lego My Brick!
Bricks were a fundamental building block of the historic world, the ‘Legos’ of the built environment. Come discover how they were made and used at Powhatan over 100 years ago. You will learn how raw clay is processed, molded, dried, and fired to become brick, then practice building your own sturdy brick walls!

Water Witching
Water is essential for human survival, but how did early pioneers find it? Well diggers almost always used water witching, the practice of finding water with the power of belief. In this program, you’ll discover the science of water below the earth’s surface and try your hand at the ancient way of finding it.

Pearl Stringing Workshop
February 15 9 am – 12 pm
$20 per necklace, $10 per bracelet, $5 per earring set
Freshwater pearls from the bottom of the Black River have been a large part of our local history, but what do you do with the pearls once they’re found? Join our staff to make beautiful necklaces, bracelets, or earrings from milky white pearls and learn about the history of the freshwater pearling industry on the Black River. Note: the pearls used in this workshop were not harvested from the Black River. Please bring a sack lunch.
