The Imboden Area Charter School received notification that they have been awarded a $4,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation .The Grant will support the Imboden Area Charter School’s Literacy Program

Imboden, Arkansas. September 9, 2013 – The Imboden Area Charter School recently received a $4,000 Youth Literacy Grant from the Dollar General Literacy Organization to support its literacy programs. Specifically, the grant will be used to purchase 20 Kindles and $1,000 worth of electronic books to expand the library and encourage the kindergarten through eighth grade students to increase the number of books they read and provide more books for check out. In addition, because of the technology, students may read the same book at the same time.

“The Dollar General Grant will increase the number of books being read, while using the most up to date technology available”, said Mr. Mike McLeod, certified tutor, IACS.

Since its inception 12 years ago, the Imboden Area School has always held to a philosophy that students achieve more when they are allowed to learn at their own level, and compete with themselves, not each other.

Students begin reading on their own level, and as they are successful at one reading level, progress to the next.

Over the years, students’ reading levels have increased 1.5 years during one school year.

“Youth literacy grants from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation are awarded at the beginning of the academic year to help make a distinct impact on the communities we serve by supporting programs that improve education and enhance literacy,” said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General’s chairman and CEO. “At Dollar General, we are passionate about our mission of Serving Others and it’s exciting to see the real difference literacy and learning makes in people’s lives.”

The Imboden Area Charter School is a Free Public School under the direction of the Arkansas Department of Education.

The School has been in Imboden for 12 years and operates under an open enrollment Charter. Students may attend from any area, and may transfer at any time during the school year without permission from their local district. Currently there are students from Lawrence, Randolph, and Sharp Counties. The school provides transportation with a bus running from Imboden to Pocahontas, Walnut Ridge, Hoxie, Portia and Black Rock. In addition, IACS participates in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program and provides breakfast and lunch each day. Anyone interested in finding out more about the school and enrollment information may contact Judy Warren, Director, at 870-869-3015.
